O Governo do Maranhão investe na regularização das terras indígenas. As negociações, comandadas pela governadora Roseana Sarney, vão permitir a demarcação das duas últimas áreas indígenas não-regularizadas do Estado. São as áreas dos Krikati e dos Guajá, último grupo nômade da América Latina. Ao todo, no Maranhão, existem 16 áreas indígenas, nas quais vive uma população de aproximadamente 18 mil índios.
